Letter N Unit

All the activities in this unit have one thing in common, they are about items that start with the letter N. This is by no means a comprehensive list of activities. It's just some of the things I have tried with K and N myself which they have enjoyed. I have attached a few printables I created and used for this unit. Feel free to print them!

This post is curriculum based but it can be done by SAHMs and working parents alike. All activities here take 5 minutes or less to carry out from start to end. They also involve very little preparatory work. Give them a try and let me know what you think 😉

1. N is for Nail

Materials:
- Nails
- Hammer
- Wooden board
- Marker

How to:
- Write out the letter 'N' on the wooden board
- Half hammer in the nails on the letter N
- Get child to hammer away!

Pro tips:
- You can get wooden boards for cheap from the AS-IS section in Ikea.. alternatively, look downstairs for planks when your neighbour renovates..
- Softer wood works better. Ikea generally uses soft wood so it won't be an issue. If you can get non-laminated pieces of wood, that would be the best.

2. N is for Numbers

Materials:
- Number flash cards
- Play dough

How to:
- Get child to 'trace' the numbers with the playdough

Pro tips:
- This activity promotes number recognition and fine motor skills.
- We used play foam instead as they are cleaner than play dough and I'm all about clean. You can use any other material to do this activity... line up pasta pieces, pieces of cut paper, etc.
- If you don't have flash cards, simply write numbers on cards using a marker and laminate them so that you can clean the play dough off easily and reuse them.

3. N is for Name

Materials:
- Letter magnets or cards with letters of child's name written on them

How to:
- Get child to spell name using the loose letter pieces.

Pro tips:
- If this is the first time your child is exposed to spelling their name, write it on a piece of paper and get them to match or line them up following the written name.
- We made up a song to teach K to remember the spelling of her name and she learnt it really quickly. Try it!

4. N is for Nest

Materials:
- Yellow and Brown paper
- White paper
- Scissors
- Glue

How to:
- Cut yellow and brown paper into strips or (for added fine motor practice) get child to cut them
- Paste the yellow and brown strips onto the white paper to make a nest
- Add birds to make it look more like a nest!

Pro tips:
- Apply the glue in a nest shape onto the white paper for child to make the end product more likely to look like a nest.
- Cut out two hill like shapes to make simple birds for the middle of the nest :)

Other Suggestions:

N is for Nose
- Look at the different types of noses that different animals have. Talk about their similarities (where it is placed on the face) and their differences (size, shape)

N is for Noodles
- Have a noodle week. Eat all types of noodles the entire week and discover which is your child's favourite type of noodle!

N is for Nuggets
- Make some Apple Chicken Nuggets! It's a popular favourite in our household.

N is for Nuts
- Get a pack of mixed nuts and do sorting activity or a taste test.
