Letter I unit

All the activities in this unit have one thing in common, they are about items that start with the letter I. This is by no means a comprehensive list of activities. It's just some of the things I have tried with K myself which she has enjoyed. I have attached a few printables I created and used for this unit. Feel free to print them!

This post is curriculum based but it can be done by SAHMs and working parents alike. All activities here take 5 minutes or less to carry out from start to end. They also involve very little preparatory work. Give them a try and let me know what you think 😉

1. I is for Ice cream

Materials:
- Play dough
- Cups
- Scoops
- Rainbow rice

How to:
- Simply set out all the materials and let them make their own ice cream sundae!

Pro tips:
- Lay out an old bed sheet under the table for easy clean up. The rice can get EVERYWHERE especially since the idea is to sprinkle it.
- Add whatever odds and ends you can find at home to make it more fun. Old no longer crunchy nuts, seeds etc work well!

2. I is for Ice pops

Materials:
- Ice pop tray
- Apple sauce or whatever you fancy

How to:
- Let child fill the tray with the apple sauce or purees
- Freeze the ice pops overnight or at least for 4 hrs.
- Fill a tub with water and let them eat their creations!

Pro tips:
- The thing is eating ice pops can be VERY MESSY. But having them in the toilet means that you can just spray all the mess down the drain.
- You can also do this as an outdoor activity, or a normal at home activity if your child is a less messy eater.. up to you!

3. Lego I

Materials:
- Lego/Duplo
- Lego mat

How to:
- Use the lego to make a capital I and a lower case i.
- Get child to make more.

Pro tips:
- I is a great letter to do this because it is pretty much THE simplest letter of the alphabet.
- Mix blocks of different colours and name a colour you want the child to use to make the I. E.g. 'Make a red I!'. Combines fine motor skills, problem solving skills AND colour recognition all in one activity.

4. I is for Igloo

Materials:
- Three semi circles of different sizes cut out from construction paper
- White stickers (can be rectangles or circles.. whichever you have)
- Glue

How to:
- Get child to stick the stickers on the big and medium semi circles
- Stick the three semi circles together to make an igloo.

Pro tips:
- If you can, borrow a book about igloos from the library to talk about it.
- We read about how the igloo even though made of cold snow actually helped to keep people warm.

Other Suggestions:

I is for Ice
- Have an ice water sensory bin! Take this chance also to talk about the 'disappearing ice', how ice melts to become water, whether ice is hot or cold...

I is for Insects
- Use a fingerprint ink pad and some markers to create your own insects. For added effect, print out the letter I printable attached and print the insects in the letter. We took this chance to talk about how insects have 3 parts to their body and 6 legs.

I is for Ice cream
- Make some real ice cream using frozen bananas and a food processor. Tip: Use short bursts of blending to get that ice cream texture.
