Rice Bin

Rice Bin

If you are okay with a little mess and handy with a vacuum, this is THE activity for you. The rice sensory bin is a great replacement for sand play, as it is much easier to clean and very easy to store. For Q&A on dealing with common issues around sensory bins, head to the sensory bin post and check out the Q&A section.

When we first did this, the entire family couldn't stop playing with it and we stood over the rice bin for a good half an hour at least! This particular activity goes especially well with construction toys.
It also works well with scoops and funnels.

Materials needed:
Bin
Coloured Rice
- Random toys

How to:
- Put rice into the bin with the toys
- Play!
- To clean up, just shake the toys to loosen any rice stuck, remove the bin and vacuum.

Pro tips:
- Stick to toys that don't have tiny grooves in which rice can get absolutely stuck in
- Always make sure all your toys are completely dry before you throw them into the bin.
- You can lay down a disposable table cloth if you prefer not to vacuum and later just bunch it up, take it out the house and dust off.
- You can also put the bin in a larger bin. Get an under the bed bin and the kids can sit in the bigger bin and keep all the mess contained.
