Letter M Unit

All the activities in this unit have one thing in common, they are about items that start with the letter M. This is by no means a comprehensive list of activities. It's just some of the things I have tried with K and N myself which they have enjoyed. I have attached a few printables I created and used for this unit. Feel free to print them!

This post is curriculum based but it can be done by SAHMs and working parents alike. All activities here take 5 minutes or less to carry out from start to end. They also involve very little preparatory work. Give them a try and let me know what you think 😉

1. M is for Macaroni

Materials:
- Construction paper
- Glue
- Macaroni
- Marker
- Dot stickers

How to:
- Write out the word 'MACARONI' on dot stickers
- Draw out the letter M on the construction paper
- Get child to stick the word 'MACARONI'
- Get child to glue macaroni in the letter M.

Pro tips:
- You can pencil the word 'MACARONI' and have them match the dot stickers to the right letters
- I would put glue dots onto where the macaronis should be placed rather than squeeze a line of glue and some kids get a bit overwhelmed and not know what to do with a whole line of glue.
- For the older kids (3 years and above), draw Xs where the glue dots should go and have them squeeze the glue onto the Xs themselves (added fine motor activity) then glue down a macaroni.

2. M is for More Marshmallows

Materials:
- 'More Please' print out
- Clear file OR laminate the print out
- Non-toxic dry erase markers
- Marshmallows

How to:
- Place marshmallows onto the print out and get child to count and fill in the numbers

Pro tips:
- work on small increments first (+1/+2) and under 10 before you go higher.
- If your child does not get it, don't fret! This is an introductory activity that is aimed at introducing the concept of more.
- If this activity is too complexed, use two bowls and place one marshmallow in one and more in another and ask which bowl has more. Make sure the quantity differences are very obviously noticeable.

3. M is for Money

Materials:
- Bag of coins
- Money Minded print out

How to:
- Give child bag of coins and get them sorting!
- Talk about the value of each coin and how you can tell through the clues on the coins.

Pro tips:
- Don't worry about them remembering or learning the names and value by hard. It's just about exposure!
- If your child already knows the coin values, then move on to talking about equal values (i.e. how ten 10cent coins equals to one dollar)

4. M is for Mix

Materials:
- Jello crystals
- Water as according to the packet
- Wisk
- HUGE bowl

How to:
- Follow the packet instructions to make jello and let the kids mix!

Pro tips:
- You can use any recipe that requires mixing. Jello is just pretty much the simplest.
- I wouldn't use cookie or cake batter as you run the risk of over mixing and cookie batter is usually too stiff to mix for young kids.

Other Suggestions:

M is for Museum
- Take a trip to the local museum! It just happened to be the children's biennale when we were on the letter M so it was a perfect time. But even if it isn't, kids tend to see things in a very different light and interesting conversations are a definite thing!

M is for Mummy
- Make a card for mummy, talk about what makes a person a mummy! OR use a white ribbon to wrap a small stuffed animal or barbie doll to make the other kind of mummy.

M is for Music
- Turn on some music and talk about what types of music there are. Listen to different genres of music and get kids to say which they like the most. Make some music!

M is for Mushroom
- Make some baked portabello mushrooms with cheese! Yum yum!
