Letter H Unit

All the activities in this unit have one thing in common, they are about items that start with the letter H. This is by no means a comprehensive list of activities. It's just some of the things I have tried with K myself which she has enjoyed. I have attached a few printables I created and used for this unit. Feel free to print them!

This post is curriculum based but it can be done by SAHMs and working parents alike. All activities here take 5 minutes or less to carry out from start to end. They also involve very little preparatory work. Give them a try and let me know what you think 😉

1. H is for Horse

Materials:
- Horse page printout
- Markers or paints or colour pencils

How to:
- Read about horses and talk about the different parts of horses: The mane, the tail, the hooves.
- Hold child's hand and write the word é©¬.

Pro tips:
- If you have been teaching Chinese, you would probably have taught your child that mummy is '妈妈'. This makes things just slightly confusing for them. K asked me right away:'马? 妈妈?'. Take this chance to teach them about the different tones of Chinese. If your kid is like mine, it will lead to an afternoon of random 'Ma's in different sing song tones 😂

2. H is for Honeydew

Materials:
- Honeydew
- Knives
- Chopping board or tray

How to:
- Slice honeydew into wedges and take the skin off.
- Let child chop wedges however they wish and make a fruit salad (if it even lasts that long!)

Pro tips:
- The honeydew went straight from being sliced to in the kids tummies. So try to do this activity at a time when you are okay with them eating or snacking.
- Keep tissues or a cloth nearby, honeydew can be very juicy and it's sweet... we don't want ants joining the activity!

3. H is for Hair

Materials:
- Paper
- Watercolours
- Straw

How to:
- Draw a face and hairline
- Use a paintbrush and put a generous amount of watercolour on the hairline
- Let your child use a straw to blow blow blow!

Pro tips:
- This is a great activity to exercise mouth muscles as well as aiming.
- To make the activity easier, keep the straw long enough to point at the paper but short enough so that your child does not have to tilt their head backwards.

4. H is for Home

Materials:
- Family Photo
- Ice cream sticks
- Construction paper
- Glue
- Stickers for decoration

How to:
- Paste the family photo on the construction paper.
- Use the ice cream sticks to make a house to frame the photo.
- Decorate the photo however you like!

Pro tips:
- Point to the different members of the family and name them.
- This is a good time to talk about what 'HOME' means. Is it just a place? Is it somewhere we feel scared or safe? Pitch it at a level easy for your child to understand based on their age. For 1 year old N, it was just talking about who we see at home. For 3 year old K, we talked about feeling safe and loved and happy.

Other Suggestions:

H is for Hamburgers
- Have a taste adventure! Let your child mix the patty mixture and make burgers together and have it for dinner! HERE is a great recipe I tried.

H is for Hand
- Hand print paintings can be really fun and pretty. It is a little messy in my opinion though! So lots of supervision needed for this. I usually make sure ALL toys are kept away before I start painting activities, especially messier ones like these.

Lego H
- Three straight lines make the letter H and that makes it perfect for some lego play. For added challenge, make capital and small Hhs with legos and see how many you can make in a minute!

H is for Hat
- A little phonics practice here in spelling out the word HAT. Print out the printable attached, sound out the different components and let your little one decode what letter makes that sound.

H is for Horse
- Another horse themed activity, but with math skills built in this time. Simply print out the printable attached for the horse size sort and get your kid to sort it from big to small or small to big. For younger kids, use only 2 or 3 out of the 4 horses to keep it simple first. If they can get the idea then add the fourth horse.
